Fall Refunds are Here for College Students

 It’s my favorite time of the semester…REFUNDS! A few weeks after the semester begins all of your financial aid pays out and if there’s any left over you get a refund! You will know that your receiving a refund if there’s a negative balance on your account. It’s the one time in history where you actually want to see a negative balance!  Figure 1: This is a thumbnail of my latest YouTube video where I am in my office with a surprised look on my face.  This semester I paid $241 in fees and I received a $500 grant for individuals who work at community colleges. Oh yeah  did I mention I work at a community college too part time as a tutor? Anyhoo, since I had already paid off my student account I received the $500 as a refund. De-Stressing after a Natural Disaster

De-stressing after a natural disaster is beyond necessary to get yourself back on track. After last week’s snowstorm, it took me a few days to get back into my normal routine. In today’s culture we have a “if you fall off get right back on and keep going” state of mind. Nevertheless, sometimes we need a break and a moment to reset. Staying in a shelter to keep warm and being without a power for a few days will definitely warrant a break!

While it was not the easiest experience, it honestly was not the worst. If you have ever experienced a tough situation, you know how important it is to not become overwhelmed.  Here are a few of the things I did to keep my spirits up:

1.      Stay busy! I kept myself so busy by completing schoolwork that even the other people at the shelter gave me a pat on the back!

2.      Spirituality. I read my bible and prayed throughout the day. I tried to focus on what God may have been trying to show me.

3.      Positive Thinking. As uncertain, as the situation was I reminded myself that things would get better and most importantly I expected them to get better!

Tips for First Year Doctoral Students

I turned in my last assignment of the semester earlier this week and man did it feel good! I still plan to take summer courses but I have about a month break until then. This first year has taught me so much about my major of higher education and myself. This past semester I took on History of Higher Education and Introduction to Quantitative Statistics. While the history course wasn’t so bad the stats course was a whole other ball game! Especially for someone who has always struggled with numbers. This course took a lot of getting used to and reminded me of somethings that all first year doctoral students should know. Adult Daily Living Skills: Packing for a Trip

 I’m going on a trip in my favorite rocket ship! Remember that? Well I’m not getting in a rocket ship but I am getting on a plane for the first time since Oct 2019! Up until that point I had been on a plane several times a year traveling all over the U.S. for conferences and for FREE might I add! This time around I’m headed to my first in person conference since 2019 for individuals who work with students with disabilities in higher education. I’ll tell you more about it later in a special VLOG.
